The father of Handler was a used car dealer, as was her mother was a housewife. Her mother was the daughter of a German immigrant who came to her home in United States in 1958. The cancer of the breast was first discovered in 1989. Her death came ten years after battling cancer. Handler was raised in Reform Judaism by her father, who was Jewish. Handler enjoyed a pleasant and healthy life growing up in a wealthy neighbourhood. In her early twenties, Handler moved into Los Angeles in order to take on acting. To help support herself, Handler began to work as an actress. But, at aged 21, Handler decided to pursue stand-up comedy as a full-time profession as she was able to discover her storytelling talents. The beginning of her career Handler began her journey by being a part of the Oxygen network all-female cast for a hidden camera/practical joke reality show on TV called Girls Behaving Badly. The show ran on air from 2002 to 2005. Handler appeared on several programs, such as Weekends at D.L. The Bernie Mac Show The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler started working on The Tonight Show as a reporter. Handler achieved her first big break in 2006 when she hosted her E! show. It was known as The Chelsea Handler Series. The Chelsea Handler Show lasted for two seasons. The following year, Handler performed on the Comedy Central's Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour in the United States. VH1, Comedy Central Premium Blend, HBO and Comedy Central have all broadcasted her stand-up comedy shows. The announcement was made in 2010 that she was to host the MTV Video Music Awards 2010. This made her the first woman hosting the VMA's post Roseanne Barr.
